Any sports enthusiast really does put their focus on their favorite sport such as who won the last game and how their favorite players are faring. When it comes to the refs, sure we all grumble about their bad calls and throw out a few boos when then have issued out a penalty to our favorite team. That though is basically as far as it goes. Once the game is over the refs are long forgotten.
Who holds the refs accountable though? After all they have taken on the position of judge and jury combined, when it comes to calling the plays? What credentials do they have to possess to put them in such an important position? Sports is big money and anyone involved in the game in any way, shape or form has some level of responsibility, including the fans.
Take hockey for example. Just what do you have to do to qualify for a position as a NHL Ref? Obviously you would have to be unbiased, just as a jury has to be when they are making decisions. They go through rigid scrutiny. What do prospective refs go through to build their unbiased credibility? Then who disciplines a ref that may not be doing his job up to the proper standards, and who sets the standards?
There really are a lot of questions that could be raised regarding this aspect of the sports industry, yet surprisingly this rarely happens. Our responsibility as fans is to be fair in our judgement of all those who bring us the wonderful sports entertainment that we so enjoy, but then a good chunk of the money that makes this possible comes out of our pockets. Do we deserve answers to some of our questions? and, shouldn't we be asking the questions in the first place?
